You may have been wondering where all the posts and newsletters have been this year! I would like to blame my blog neglect on my recent addiction to Facebook! Seriously, it is an addicting site, however, that's not the real reason for the lack of posts. I feel that God is re-directing my life this year and wanted to share about it with my clients. First and foremost, I am still in business! I absolutely love my clients and am so very passionate about photography and recording cherished memories. I'm still continuing my education, staying up on the latest equipment and software, and honing my skills. However, I am scaling down a bit in the business this year for a number of reasons. The first, and most important, reason is my family. I don't want to take photos of everyone else's kids and miss taking my own children's portraits. I'm also realizing how fast my kids are growing up and really wanting to cherish the time I have and make memories with them. I've been planning Friday night family night activities and am doing a lot more crafts, field trips and special things with them. It's been a blast, but to do it well, it takes a lot of organization and planning.

The second reason is that God is using my gift to be a blessing for others. It's not my gift anyway. He gave it to me, so I want to use it to glorify Him. This really hit home when I took photos of little Aiden who has leukemia. I know I was blessed by meeting the little guy and witnessing the courage and hope of his mom more than they were even blessed by receiving complimentary photos. This has spurred me on to pursue volunteer opportunities to do what I'm most passionate about - saving babies lives. God has opened doors for me to volunteer my talent for two different pregnancy resource centers and I'm excited to see how He is going to use this!

By nature, I am a perfectionist. I want to give 100% of me to whatever I do - my marriage, my kids, my church, my volunteering, and of course my business. I know that I am going to be a full-time photographer in the future, but this is just not the season of my life for that. Having said that, I am making some business changes for this year that I think most of my clients will be thrilled about and will be more doable for me as well! Ready.... drumrolll please.........

Sessions will be the same: on-location, unlimited time and outfit changes.

However, in lieu of session fees and print collections, there will now be a standard rate which will include the session and a cd of 30-40 images from the session.* I know many clients will love the freedom to print whatever, whenever, email images, post to facebook, etc! *Rates will be higher in evenings and on Saturdays.

Ice in Texas

I had to seize the moment and ran out in my backyard to snap a photo of a rare site in Texas - an icicle on my tree! It was FREEZING out (and just two days before is was 82 degrees!) and I was covering my camera with my jacket because it was sprinkling. Then, on the way back to the house I stepped in dog poop! I hope this photo was worth it!

A Very Special Session

I was honored to meet a little boy last week whose mom calls "her hero". He truly is a strong two year old with a zest for life. If you remember, several months ago I held a contest and Aidan was the winner. Aidan has leukemia and says "thank you" when the nurses give him his chemotherapy. He loves to sing and dance. He is so precious, and so is his mom. I was blessed to meet this family and encourage you to stay up to date on his myspace page and please pray for him and his family. His mom has complete faith in the Lord. Even though this is a huge struggle, she knows in her heart that God is in control of our circumstances even when we do not understand. Even through the heartache, God is Love and He cares deeply for His children. She reminded me of that.

As Hanson Fong said in his workshop last week, photography "tips" aren't new. We are building on what other photographers have taught and sharing the knowledge. One of the cool things I have learned from urban photographers that I admire, is their ability to take cool photos anywhere - even in an alley or by a dumpster, or should I say, especially in an alley or by a dumpster! I LOVE urban sessions. I truly get inspired in downtown settings and love the shapes, colors and textures! Here's one I took a few weeks ago in front of a dumpster and a few more in a downtown area.

What inspires your creativity? For me, lately, it's people, urban sessions and bright colors!

Tuesday's Tip: Light 3 - bright sun

I had the privilege of attending a Hanson Fong seminar at the Southwest Professional Photographers Association Regional Convention this weekend. Hanson has been in the business for over 30 years and is a master photographer. So, today, I'll share some tips that I learned from him.

1st tip - Photoshop! Just kidding! I just had to write this because it cracks me up. When I went to Texas School and then this convention, I have learned that none of the instructors look anything like their photo! It is so funny to me that they all make themselves look about 5-10 years younger and a little bit thinner! Even Hanson admitted to it and laughed about it.

Hanson is primarily a wedding photographer so he doesn't have the luxury of always shooting right before sunset or in the shade. So what does he do? Well, he uses a lot of expensive equipment and lighting! So, you don't have that? It's ok. You can feel confident shooting in any lighting conditions, including bright sunlight, without tons of equipment. I found this video tutorial that explains it better than I can:

One of the problems I have personally encountered when shooting into the sun is sun flare or sun spots. To avoid this, use a petal lens hood (see http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/lens-flare.htm

for an example) and don't angle your camera up. Now, go practice shooting some midday sun at the pumpkin patch!

Tuesdays Tip: Light 2

Let's talk about taking photos in the shade - any time of day. Open shade is great light for photos. One thing to watch out for, though, is patchy shade. For example, if the subject is under trees and there are spots of sun coming through onto the subject's face, it might look a little strange. Move your subject to shade from a building or somewhere where the shade is a little more even. Also, when you are shooting in the shade, eyes may tend to look a little dark. In order to get "catchlights" in the eyes to brighten them up, have something bright reflect back in your subject's eyes. For example, you could put your subject in the grass with a white sidewalk in front of them. You'll be surprised at how the light will be reflected back in your subject's eyes. Also, as we talked about last week, you can use a white poster board or something similar to reflect the light back. Here's your exercise this week: Not only practice the above, but start noticing light and the quality of light wherever you go. When you are talking with someone, notice the light in their eyes. Do you see the catchlights? Look for open shade and notice where the sun is coming from. If you are in open shade and face your subject towards the sun (even on a cloudy day, where the sun would be if it was out), you'll get more light in their eyes, which in turn makes for a better photograph. I was reading a book to my son in his dark room the other day and noticed how even the little book reflected light back in his face as we were reading. Once you start noticing light, you'll have a better idea of where to put your subjects for the photo.

Tuesday's Tip: Light (lesson one)

Light - it's what photography is all about. In the next few weeks we'll talk about photographing in various lighting conditions. Today we'll start with natural window light. North facing windows are best, but any will do (especially on a sunny day). Place your child next to the window and get them some toys or a book to keep them occupied if need be. Have the window light pour onto the side of their face and turn off the flash on your camera. This lighting is very dramatic with the highlights and shadows. If you need a little more light on the shadow side, you can place a white poster board or even a silver car window shade on the floor next to the child to reflect light back in his face. Experiment and have fun!

Tuesday's Tip: Perspective

Today's assignment is pretty easy, but you will see a drastic difference in your photos if you haven't been using this technique. Instead of taking pictures of your subjects at your level, try some variations. Leave your subject stationary (if they aren't a toddler!) and walk around them for different angles. Squat down to be eye level with a child. I know I am guilty of being on my "adult" level often when I videotape, but when I get down on my children's level then I capture them head on. On the other hand, to add a little spice, use that high angle at times, but even make it more drastic by climbing on a nearby wall or ladder and look down on your subject. To do the opposite, get down low, maybe even on your stomach and angle your camera up at your subject. Try one low shot and one eye level and one high and compare the images. What do you like and dislike about each one? Which is your favorite? Have fun!

I'm so excited about this because it is my passion for everyone to have great photos of their special memories. Document A Day In Your Life
We always remember to bring out the camera for birthday parties and Christmas, but what about documenting the little things that happen every day? Believe me, one day you will forget how the house looked like with toys strewn all over the floor! Don't just take photos of the kids, but take some detailed up-close shots of inanimate objects as well. If you are really ambitious, you could pair all your photos with journaling and would have a beautiful memory of a typical day in this season of your life.

Here's an example of photographs to take:
-Your kids sleeping and/or waking up in their pajamas
-A closeup of that special blanket or teddy bear
-At the breakfast table
-Closeup of a typical breakfast
-Brushing their teeth
-In their carseats
-At a playdate
-At daycare with their teachers
-Lunch
-Naptime
-Silly things they do (running/jumping etc)
-Toys they play with
-Books they read
-Dinner
-Getting ready for bed
-Take photos of their bedroom decor etc.

I hope that gives you some ideas! We'll talk more about technicalities in later installments, but this is a way to get started without the pressure of taking "perfect" pictures! So, that's your assignment this week if you should choose to accept between loads of laundry, PTA, soccer practice, etc! :)

I wanted to do something important and special for my 100th blog post, so I decided to make Christmas come a little early for someone special and their family! Here's the deal:

I know there are families in the Dallas area who would absolutely love to have custom portraits taken, but cannot afford it. I want to offer a deserving family a chance to have professional portraits taken at no cost. This family chosen will be one who values photos of their loved ones and freezing moments in time to remember forever.

This idea was sparked from watching one of my all-time favorite shows: Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The families featured on that show are always so deserving and are blessed with a beautiful home built in seven days. Now I can't build you a home, but I would love to offer a deserving family some heirloom Christmas portraits to be treasured forever. I love to see new additions to families! Big brother was doing so well and little brother was only six days old! That is the best time to take newborn photos - the earlier the better. Young babies sleep a lot and mold themselves into that fetal position. What a great family. You might recognize big brother from this post when he turned two. T, you are so funny and are such a great big brother!

Photos Make Kids Feel Loved

Forgive the photographic quality of the following photo. I just took a quick snapshot, to illustrate the following quick story. Ever since he was about 5 months old, my son, like most babies loved to look at pictures of himself. I recently hung two 16x20's of him in his room, and everytime he is in there, he points to them, smiles, and tries to say his name. It's so awesome to me that the pictures that bring me so much joy also bring my children happiness and build their self-esteem. I think photographic displays of them help them know they are cherished and loved.

Mom and I were joking about someday taking "L's" senior pictures. What a cool graduation slideshow I could put together from all his previous sessions! Who knows what kind of cool technology there will be in 14 years though. And, although we all know they grow way too fast, we need to focus on the moments we have now. It's so easy to get caught up in the past or future, that we miss the special moments in today.

Ok, I'm off my soapbox! Anyway, I had fun playing "pirates" at the playground with "L" and soon his little brother will be running around playing too. Last time I photographed "N" was when he was just a month old. View Session Here. My, how he has grown! Such a cutie too!

Big Sis and Twins

"M" is such a great big sister to her 16 month old twin siblings! She loves to be a big helper. She loves to dress up as a princess and play dolls too. I even got a goodbye hug after the session! Such a sweetie!

"R" likes to explore things and go!! He reminded me so much of my own son, who is a month younger. I get my exercise chasing kids this age!

It was near bedtime towards the end of the session and "A" was walking around with her blanket.

Wall Portraits and Photographic Art Displays

Here's a side by side comparison of an 8x10 photo on the left and a30x40 gallery wrapped canvas on the right. When decorating with photos, sometimes people may think an 8x10 or 11x14 looks "big" in their hands, but once displayed on a wall, the photos tend to look very small!

One of my favorite ways to find inspiration in decorating is by visiting model homes. I notice that they aren't cluttered with little photographs and decorations, but instead, they display just a few large scale items to draw the eye towards that prominent display. This can be done with either one very large portrait as shown below or a collection of smaller portraits displayed in a gallery type style.

My favorite quote from Nate, the decorator is to "surround yourself with things you love". Why not use your priceless photographs as one of a kind art pieces in your home?

I'm back from the Texas School of Professional Photography sponsored by the Texas Professional Photographers of America. What an awesome week of intensive training I received from our instructor, Lori Nordstrom. Not only is she super talented, she's also super sweet. I learned tons from her, but I also had a wealth of information at my disposal in my awesome classmates as well. For those not familiar with Texas School, it is the largest school of it's kind, boasting 995 attendees this year! It is a great way to stay current on industry trends and have a blast while doing it!

We had this great plan to take photos at this old train station where there is never anyone there. Well, wouldn't you know that at the time of our shoot it was "Thomas the Train" Day! Note t0 self - check location websites for upcoming events! Anyway, the family was flexible and we tried to stay as far away from Thomas so "W" wouldn't see him!

Yes, little "J" is crying in this one. He has reached the age of independence and wanted to run into the alley all by himself. Unfortunately, it was not a deserted alley!

Bright, Bold and Beautiful

Ok, maybe handsome is a better word. But their outfits were so great, I had to do these in color. These brothers were loads of fun. After they played on the playground we went on over to an old train that is part of a museum. We opened a gate to get in and take some cool train pics. After a few minutes, the museum employee came out and I thought for sure he was going to ask us to leave. But, instead he was so cool! He opened the train for us and gave us a short history lesson while the boys got to play conductor. The boys had fun, we all learned something and we got some great photos to remember the day!

Fun to be Four

I loved this little guy! Isn't he cute? Sometimes I get asked how I get toddlers and preschoolers to give me genuine smiles and expressions. The kids look so calm in the final pictures. Let me tell you that any parent whom I've worked with knows that I leave the shoot having had my workout for the day! With this guy, his mom brought a soccer ball, some cars, a lovey etc. Those personal items that children love really help them to have fun and be themselves. So, I got to work a little on my soccer skills while I was behind the camera! It definately takes some patience to get "the shot", but it's well worth it and a lot of fun in the process! It also takes the pressure off of mom and dad to force their kids to smile. This mom was awesome - she just let me "play" with "J" which resulted in a ton of great photos.

Catching Up!

I got a chance a few weeks ago to get away to Florida and focus on photography. I stayed at a resort that had a nature trail and got to photograph alligators, turtles, all kinds of birds, etc. However, I'm not really a nature girl. (My idea of camping is an air conditioned RV, or better yet, a hotel!) So, when I was out there all alone listening for rattle snakes, I freaked out at every sound I heard! I think I'll stick to photographing kids - believe me, they are not near as scary, although some people may disagree! :)

Eighteen months and full of life! "D" even sat in my lap and cuddled with me for a few minutes towards the end of the session. Well, I think he got close because he really wanted my camera! But, I'll take cuddles any way I can get them!

It's such a privilege to watch the kids I take photos of grow up! I saw these two beautiful and sweet sisters a year and a half ago. They have grown taller and hair has grown longer, but they are still such well mannered and fun little girls.

I didn't know I liked Chai Tea

I have never liked tea or coffee and always wished I did so I could go hang out at Starbucks! Well, I had heard of chai tea, but assumed it was like ice tea or something. I finally gave it a chance tonight and was HOOKED! I mixed it with hot cocoa from Lattes on Location and it was DELICIOUS! Oh, what I've been missing! It went especially well with our first blast of winter air today!

Lately I've been taking lots of pictures of siblings with their new baby brothers or sisters. Here's princess "L", who has grown up so much since our last session in January. Her 6 month old sister was full of smiles, even through the wardrobe changes. This was another wonderful family to work with. I say it all the time, but it's true - I have the best clients in the world. It's so great to meet all these wonderful young families. I LOVE my job!

Summer Family Time

I love being able to watch children grow up in front of me. I took these precious kids photos two years ago, and my have they changed! They were full of energy and the family was so relaxed. I love it when clients "forget" the camera is there!

I've been a bad blogger lately. Here's a few of a high school friend of mine and her boyfriend. "C" likes photography too and I have to say we got our start in highschool! Once in awhile during slumber parties we would hang a white sheet on the wall and take pictures for fun! So, I had to dig hard for the last one, but I found one from the good 'ole days! Bet you haven't seen that one, "J"! :)

Another set of twins that just turned one! Love the cake all over his face, although, sister would have nothing to do with it!

This sweet little guy just came home from the hospital. He was born premature, but was doing so well! Welcome home, "N"!

It was a great year photographing "B" and "A". I first met their mom when she was pregnant, and we didn't get to do the maternity shoot because she went into labor early! But, we captured their growth over this last year and it was so great to be a part of it and watch them change. They are sweethearts!

Back from Maternity Leave

I'm back! I had a wonderful leave - full of time devoted to my new, growing family. We had a healthy baby boy who has already filled out lives with joy. He is growing so fast and I'm trying to cherish each day. I've had time to slow down a little and focus on the important things in life. I've been on more picnics, done more crafts, baked more homemade cookies, and spent more time with friends and family. It was refreshing. I've been thinking about the limited time God has given me to raise my children and how I want to make the most of that time. Now don't get me wrong. I absolutely LOVE my job. I think being a photographer is the best job in the world, and I'm very passionate about it and doing my best at it, but I must admit, that prior to my son's birth, it had been consuming me. So, even more than photography, I am very passionate about being a good wife, mother, sister, friend, etc. I've been thinking and praying about it a lot, and am going to continue photography, but for the next year or so, I will be taking a limited number of sessions per month, so I can put my family first. This is the awesome thing about being a small business owner and having awesome clients who understand. We as moms wear so many different hats, and it's so hard to do all things at 100%. Some things have to go. (I think in my case it will be cleaning the house!) I want to give my best to the things I choose to do.

Isn't she gorgeous? Well, this shoot was near and dear to me, because that is my little sister! The shoot was a blast because everyone was staring at her and giving her well wishes. The little kids thought she was a princess, and one little girl's mom even asked us if she could take a picture of her daughter with the "princess"! After the shoot, we went to an ice cream parlor, and you wouldn't believe the looks we got - I'm glad she doesn't embarrass easy! Oh, I have to tell you. Good thing you can't smell the photographs, because the first shot was taken right next to the dumpster - no kidding! You never know where a good photo opportunity lies!

Another Newborn

This time it wasn't mine! A friend and colleague of mine - Jamie Woodward - took birth photos for me. It was so awesome to have the moments my son entered this world recorded forever! So, I had the honor of returning the favor for her a few weeks ago. She had a home birth and was so incredibly calm and brave!

If you are in the area, from now until February 27th there is a photography exhibit at the City of Richardson Library located off Arapaho and 75. Three portraits I took are on display in the professional division, one winning 2nd place in it's category, and the other two taking third in their categories. My family went tonight and I thoroughly enjoyed all the different styles of art!

My clients are so patient with me, because I use that phrase way too often! I am so addicted to the shutter button! I think the session is over, and then I see another "moment". I really need to stop lying and say, "Just 100 more" instead!

Here's some from a session in which I took way too many pictures! But, babies expressions change so fast. These cuties are featured on my blog 5 months ago when they were only 5 weeks old! They are developing such cute personalities now and it's so much fun to watch them grow. I can't wait to take their one year old photos!

Childhood Innocence

I don't think there is anything sweeter than an image of a child staring out a window with her stuffed animal in her hand. It looks like she's contemplating life and is so peaceful. To get her to the window,though, we asked her to look for a kitty cat - so that's probably what she's thinking about!

If you just recently found out that you are pregnant, congratulations! It's also not too early to start thinking about your maternity and newborn photos! With January booked, and my own maternity leave beginning in February, I am now booking sessions for July! I know it's hard to think 6 months out, but if you are expecting in late summer, early fall, it will be a perfect time to schedule a session. Just email or call and I'll get you in the books!

I hope everyone had a great Christmas! I sure did, but am glad to be back in a routine and shooting photos again! I had such a fun engagement session today and will share some photos from it soon. However, in the meantime, I just wanted to challenge those of you who have been married for awhile to remember what it was like when you were engaged! Those googly eyes, whispering sweet nothings, hours on the phone, etc! It's refreshing to spend some time with new loves and newlyweds because it helps me remember that time. So, spend some time with your significant other without the kids! Write a sweet love note and pack it in his lunch, give him a massage, act like teenagers again! In a nutshell, don't wait for Valentine's Day to show your love!

Who Doesn't Like FREE Things?

There is a lot in the works for 2007 - one being a Rewards Program. In a nutshell, if you place your order within a certain time frame you will be eligible to earn rewards based on how much you spend. The rewards are a secret right now (some of them are not available for purchase on their own)... you'll have to book a session to find out what they are! To keep the excitement, they will be rotated, so you never know what you might get!

It seems like I've been blessed with taking lots of photos of boys lately!

It can be a challenge to photograph siblings together! Usually one is making a goofy face, or has their eyes shut or something. So I get very excited when I capture an image of both kids together looking like they are enjoying life! I love mom in the background too - just watching her active little boys.

I absolutely love this photo because it is real life! We were actually taking a break during the shoot so baby could eat, but I had to capture the moment because it shows a mom's real life with two small children!

Grab Some Hot Chocolate!

I LOVE this cold weather - it makes it feel more like the Christmas season to me. I've had a lot of brave families venture out in it for some outdoor photos. This family had the coats, blanket and each other. All they need is some hot chocolate! Speaking of, for something different, I thought I'd share my favorite hot chocolate recipe!

Fabulous Hot Chocolate (from Recipezaar.com)
1 (15 oz) can sweetened consensed milk
1 (4 oz) German Sweet Chocolate, broken into pieces
1 c whipping cream, whipped
6 c milk, heated

-In a saucepan, mix condensed milk and chocolate pieces.
-Stir constantly over low heat until chocolate melts.
-Cool to room temperature.
-Fold in the whipped cream.
-Use now, or store covered in the fridge for up to one week.
-To make hot chocolate, spoon a 1/4 c of chocolate milk into a mug, add 1/2 c of hot milk and stir.
